Illustrator's Visit

The students had an awesome time during the illustrator's visit.  I was amazed at how well they were able to draw and keep up with the illustrator as he drew.  Watch the clip to check out some of their masterpieces!

Interim Reports

Don't forget to head over to Parent Portal to check your child's grades for his/her interim report. Here is the link to an earlier post that was sent out on how to log onto Parent Portal.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Google Classroom

I am always looking for ways to use technology in the classroom.  Today, students were introduced to Google Classroom.  Google Classroom is designed to help teachers create and collect assignments paperlessly.  With Google Classroom students can keep track of what's due on the Assignment Page and begin working with just a click!  I will be able to quickly see who has or hasn't completed an assignment, and provide direct, real-time feedback to students.

First Google Classroom Assignment
Students were given their first Google Classroom assignment today. They had to create a newspaper article sharing something they have learned in class.  This gave me the opportunity to show students how they would receive assignments, receive feedback on their assignments, and how to share their assignments once they were complete.

Completed Student Work

Here's what students had to say about Google Classroom after they completed their very first assignment:

Domenique:  It's a great way to share my work and get feedback from Ms. Scriven.

Aryanna:  I think it's a great way to share and complete projects.

Malik: I like that Ms. Scriven can return an assignment with feedback and I can make corrections and resubmit it.

Madi:  I think it is much easier than using worksheets.

Evan:  I like using Google Classroom because it saves a lot of time.

I am looking forward to using Google Classroom and I think the students will really enjoy it!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

It is my favorite time of year - Parent/Teacher Conferences!  I always enjoy sitting down and chatting with my parents!  During this time you will have the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with me to share any important information I need to know about your child.  This includes hobbies, likes, dislikes, etc.  I will also share with you how well your child is progressing thus far in 5th grade. I will also answer questions you may have that may not have been answered during 5th Grade Orientation.  Take a few minutes to click the Volunteer Spot button below to sign up for a conference time.  If you are not available to come in during any of the allotted times and will need a phone conference, please send me and email.

Thank you! I am looking forward to our time together!

Assessment Binders

Your child should have brought home his/her Assessment Binder on Friday.  Inside you will find 4 graded assignments.  Please take a few minutes to go over all assessments with your child.  After you have gone over the assessments, please allow your child to take a few minutes to complete his/her Reflections on Learning sheet. This sheet is designed to give students the opportunity to reflect on his/her learning, create a plan for improvement, and set goals for the upcoming week. Once your child has completed his/her reflection, please be sure to go over it and sign and date it.  I will be checking Assessment Binders and conferencing with students about their goals on Monday.

Boosterthon Pledges

The students had an amazing time during the Boosterthon Fun Run!  Even though it was hot, the majority of the students ran 35 or more laps!  I was very impressed!  Now that the fun is over, it's time to get those pledges in.  You may send in pledges or you may fulfill your pledges online. Be sure to check your child's green folder for his/her pledge sheet which indicates the amount that is still owed!  As always, thank you so much for supporting this year's fundraiser!  You all are amazing!
Fun Run pictures are on the way!!

A Message from Ms. Scriven

Hi Parents!  I hope you all are enjoying your weekend!  I just want to give you a few updates about our upcoming week.  We will begin MAP testing next week.  We are scheduled to take reading Wednesday, September 9th and Math Thursday, September 18th.  I will share your child's results with your during our Parent/Teacher Conference on September 25th.  Be on the lookout for more information on Parent/Teacher Conferences!

We will have our Boosterthon Fun Run Thursday, September 11th at 11:00. This will be held at Kelly Mill Middle School.  If your child has not gotten any donations, there is still time! Please feel free to come out and cheer our class on as they run their laps! It's going to be a great time!

9/11

As you know, this coming Thursday will mark the 13th anniversary of 9/11. As we begin to learn about the events surrounding this event in history, we would like to encourage you to help us at home.  Please consider sharing your story with your child.  Where were you when the events of 9/11 unfolded?  How did your life change after 9/11?  Your children will surely value your memories as they will help offer an even deeper picture than any textbook would.  Thank you in advance for your help!
